Cathedral Square and Surrounds
Revitalising Cathedral Square and the surrounding area is crucial to Christchurch’s overall regeneration. Cities are often defined by the quality of their centre and at the moment our centre needs some attention. While there has been plenty of progress across the central city as a whole, the area around Cathedral Square hasn’t seen the same level of activity or private investment.
We all acknowledge that we can’t do it alone – it’s going to take collective agreement on a vision and some actions, including investment and redevelopment, in order to kick-start redevelopment. Regenerate Christchurch is working with its statutory partners – Christchurch City Council, the Crown and Ngāi Tahu – and a range of stakeholders to develop a regeneration strategy and action plan for Cathedral Square and the surrounding area (broadly, the area between Hereford, Cambridge, Kilmore and Manchester Streets).
We need a clear vision for the area. We also need to identify short and longer term actions to achieve this vision. The aim is to have a draft strategy developed before the end of the year.

Draft concept and key moves
about 2 months agoCities are often defined by the quality of their centre, and what it offers.
Regenerate Christchurch is working with our partners – Christchurch City Council, the Crown, Ngāi Tahu and Environment Canterbury – and a range of stakeholders to develop a regeneration strategy for Cathedral Square and the surrounding area. Our focus is on the area between Kilmore Street to the north and Hereford Street to the south, and between Cambridge Terrace to the west and Manchester Street to the east.
Regenerate Christchurch proposed a draft concept for the area in July 2017 to test some key moves we think will help stimulate investment and deliver a centre that showcases the very best of our city.

Here's what we know about the area
7 months agoThere has already been much work completed in the area and a significant amount of historical information of how it has evolved over time. There were also a large number of public comments and ideas that were shared through Share an Idea in 2011. We are keen to share this information with the community so they are able review, discuss, debate and examine it so it can inform their views as we engage with them on the development of the strategy.
This information is not new – it comes from a number of sources and is being added to all the time.

Here's why we're working to revitalise Cathedral Square and its surrounds
While there's lots of investment and development in Christchurch, the shaded red areas on this video show undeveloped land. That's why we're joining with private owners, the Council and our partners to speed up development and build investor confidence in this part of the central city.
Keep up to date on progress, including opportunities to give your feedback and have your say, by checking back regularly to see what’s new on this page.
