Cathedral Square and Surrounds
Revitalising Cathedral Square and the surrounding area is crucial to Christchurch’s overall regeneration. Cities are often defined by the quality of their centre and at the moment our centre needs some attention. While there has been plenty of progress across the central city as a whole, the area around Cathedral Square hasn’t seen the same level of activity or private investment.
We all acknowledge that we can’t do it alone – it’s going to take collective agreement on a vision and some actions, including investment and redevelopment, in order to kick-start redevelopment. Regenerate Christchurch is working with its statutory partners – Christchurch City Council, the Crown and Ngāi Tahu – and a range of stakeholders to develop a regeneration strategy and action plan for Cathedral Square and the surrounding area (broadly, the area between Hereford, Cambridge, Kilmore and Manchester Streets).
We need a clear vision for the area. We also need to identify short and longer term actions to achieve this vision. The aim is to have a draft strategy developed before the end of the year.

On 31 July Regenerate Christchurch published a draft concept and key moves for Cathedral Square and the surrounding area.
From 31 July to 21 August 2017 we received 735 comments – 16 from groups and 719 from individuals. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide their thoughts.
Here is a summary of the feedback we received and, importantly, how that feedback is helping develop the regeneration strategy for the area.

Regenerate Christchurch is working with our partners – Christchurch City Council, the Crown, Ngāi Tahu and Environment Canterbury – and a range of stakeholders to develop a regeneration strategy for Cathedral Square and the surrounding area. Our focus is on the area between Kilmore Street to the north and Hereford Street to the south, and between Cambridge Terrace to the west and Manchester Street to the east.
Regenerate Christchurch proposed a draft concept for the area in July 2017 to test some key moves we think will help stimulate investment and deliver a centre that showcases the very best of our city.
